Halloween at Sew What
Clients start presenting their costume ideas as early as August. It's a very busy time of year for me. Sketches, patterns, accumulation of materials, and construction of these costumes is time consuming, but one of my favorite things to do.
Halloween 2014 was the year I took my experiences with leather up a notch. I was presented with the challenges of creating Supercon hero costumes, and I did do some work in lycra, but I needed to create height and rigid forms so I decided to mold and airbrush leather to get the desired effects. I was very pleased with the outcome, and became very educated, very quickly.
These are my favorite costumes of 2013. Riddick Rule the Dark, the Pillaging Viking, and Edna Mode from Pixar's The Incredibles.
The Riddick costume is made with a mixture of materials including leather, stingray hide, and fabric. The harness and gauntlet are separate pieces, and were hand-laced. I even made all the lacing. The Viking is leather, rabbit fur, and a little fabric for the cape. I made the necklace, gauntlets, fur coverings of shoes, and the belts. The helmet and battle axe were purchased online (client purchase). Edna Mode costume is fully lined and is made of layer of vinyl sewn to a bodice.
